Week Two Reading: p. 102-202

**This week you will need to post one more comment on the Week One board, along with the Week Two requirements. Please return to the comment section in Week One and read all of the comments below your last post. I have listed directions at the end for you. Happy Blogging!

Questions for Week Two:

  • Describe the Rusty Ruins and what clues show us that it is based on our life. What do you think was the terrible end of life as we know it?
  • Explain what the Special Circumstance division is and your feelings towards this division.
  • Explain what the problem with Tally's operation is. Do you think she made the right decision and why?
  • Explain why the rangers had to produce a firestorm to save the planet. Compare this situation to another situation in the novel or our world.
  • All humans in our society would have been considered an Ugly according to this book, even movie stars and models. What are your thoughts about this concept?
  • Do you think Tally will turn Shay in? Make a prediction about whether or not you think Tally will have the opportunity or choose to turn Pretty.

  1. Dear Bloggers,
The rangers had to produce a firestorm because they are trying to get rid of all the phragmipedium panthera. They are trying to get rid of this certain flower because one day a Rusty scientist discovered a way to engineer the species to adapt to wider conditons. The thing is, she messed up the expirement, so they grew and they grew and they have to get rid of them somehow, so they burn them! I would be scared just like Tally was to wake up and see the field that you were sleeping in was burning!

  2. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
Special Circumstance is kind of like the brains of the city. They make sure that everything is running smoothly but to look at the town you'd never know it. Not many people have ever seen a "Special" and most "Uglies" and "New Pretties" don't even believe in them. These people had surgery to make them look cruel and wolflike so that when you look at them, you are fearful. Special Circumstances is involved in making sure that there are no infiltrators from the outside world so that the people in this community think that their way is the only way of living and so noone questions their authority and way of running things. I think that this division was started by the people who made this city the way it is. They are the ones to blaim for brainwashing everybody. I think that there must be something rotton about them because "Specials" basically live in hiding and nobody really knew where their headquarters were. Tally had no knowledge of Special Circumstances and I think that there is a reason that they are kept secret. ~ OR1020

  3. Dear Bloggers,
I have never really thought about modles being considered uglies in this book. It's weird to think that since this book takes place in the future we are all cnsidered uglies now. I also think about being like born ugly and ugly till ur sixteen? I wonder why the author chose sixteen to be the year of your surgery? They could be tunrned pretty when they are twenty or twentyone or even fifteen!

  4. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
The problem with Tally's operation is that Dr. Cable, and Special Circumstances, wants to find where the Smoke is. The Smoke is a place where people run away to escape the life of the city and all their lies. Tally's friend of three months runs away to the smoke and Dr. Cable knows that this is the opportunity to find out where the Smoke is. She tells Tally that she will not be turned "pretty" until she finds the Smoke and betrays her friend Shay along with everybody else living in the smoke. Shay had given Tally coded directions as to where the smoke was. I don't know how I feel about Tally's decision. I don't think I would betray my friend. I might run away to the Smoke because if I didn't turn pretty, I would have to stay in Ugly Town forever and be the laughing stock of the century. I might tell Dr. Cable that I would do it and get her support and use the hoverboard and SpagBol that she gave me, but then just drop the tracker in s tream somewhere and stay in the Smoke or try to find a different city that didn't know about her and who would turn her pretty. I don't really know what I would do. I think I would have to be put in that position to understand because I have no concept of how deep her desire to be "pretty" runs. ~ OR1020

  5. Dear Bloggers,
I think that Tally will turn in Shay. Or I think that maybe the Special Circumstances planted a special chip on Tally that the Smoke people can't sense it or find it. I think that Tally may turn in Shay because she wants to be pretty, and if she doesn't she will be ugly for life!!! She doesn't want Shay to get hurt or in trouble. She wants Shay to be pretty with her, but Shay wants to live on her own terms. Tally wants to have a PRETTY adventure with Shay, but Shay wants to have a SMOKE adventure with Tally. I also think that Dr. Cable might of had a chip somewhere in Tally, so she can send a hoovercar over to the Smoke to find all the uglies that didnt want to be pretties. Well blog to you all later.

  6. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
All humans in our society would have been considered an Ugly according to this book, even movie stars and models. It's hard to think that some of the people that we consider really beautiful would be hard to look at compared to the "pretty" people in this book. I think that this is because everybody got so used calling "pretties" pretty and it just seemed like that was the way it was. In the book, the teachers tell students that the way they feel towards pretties, slackjawed and awestruck, is just part of evolution. I think that this is a load of cow poo. It's not called evolution, it's called brainwashing!!! If people in our society today saw what was considered a "pretty" person, they might think, that's a nice looking person, but there's just as much a chance that they look away in disgust. According to them, I'm an ugly, you're an ugly. Everybody is an ugly. I think this is wrong and that these people need to change their thinking styles. ~ OR1020

  7. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
In response to MS0618, I agree that it would be really scary to wake up to see the field in which you are sleeping to be on fire. I think she was most afraid that her hoverboard would get ruined and that then she would have to walk the rest of wherever she was going. I agree with everything that you said about the flowers. They were scarse and pretty, so someone made them so they would easily grow in more places and then they became a menace. Dandelions remind me of these flowers. I don't think anyone mixed with the genetics, but they look like flowers and yet everyone is trying to get rid of them. When I was little, I would argue with my classmates that dendelions were weeds and not flowers, and of course I was right "because my daddy told me so." It also reminds me of clover. This is because the clover crouds out the grass and then pretty soon, there's not any grass in a big patch on your lawn. I think that the person who made them this way didn't think all the way through and so the outcome was disasterous. There are many things in our world today that should have been given more time and thought. These are things that cause problems every day. ~ OR1020

  8. OR,

I never really thought of the fact that the Special Circumstances division must have had surgery to look cruelly beautiful! It blows my mind to think of all the engineering involved in terms of the physical characteristics of each person in their community. Their emphasis on looks becomes more and more disturbing as I read the novel, but it also makes me think about our own society and how we need to alter our views on the importance of looks. Great observations!

  9. MS,

I completely agree with your statement that Tally wants to have a Pretty adventure with Shay and Shay wants to have a Smoke adventure with Tally! If they both want such drastically different situations from their friendship, will it last? Or will one of them change their minds about how they want to live life? I certainly hope that we will find out the answers by the end of the book!

  10. Dear Bloggers,
Special Circumstances division is a group of people that try to find the Smoke. They try to find people who run away from turning pretty. I think that it is a bad thing because they shouldn't force people to turn pretty. I think they should give the people an option because I don't think it is going to hurt anybody if some people don't turn pretty. Most of the people in the book want to turn pretty anyway so nothing would really change.

I personally think that Special Circumstances is a group, that in my opinion, is sort of nosey. They just need to mind their own business and stay out of other people's worlds. They are trying to find the Smoke and I hope they find it because I want Tally to be pretty

  12. Dear Uglies,
Tally operation isn't working out because Special Circumstances wont allow her to be pretty unless she tattles on her friend Shay. They are being unfair and in a way they seem like they are blackmailing her. I give Shay credit for being a good friend but then she goes and tells Special Circumstances where Shay is. So I think her choice was sort of good but I am really mad that they still won't turn her pretty =(

  14. Dear Bloggers,
The problem with Tally's operation is that she knows where Shay is and Special Circumstances knows that she knows. They won't turn her pretty until she tells them where Shay is and where the Smoke is. Tally decides that she is going to tell them where Shay is just so she can turn pretty. Tally gives Doctor Cable the note that Shay gave her, but Doctor Cable says that it is in code that only Tally knows and that she will have to find the Smoke for them. Tally is now trying to find the Smoke. I think that she made a bad decision because she is betraying her friend and all the other "Smokies." My prediction is that Tally will not activate the eye thing and Special Circumstances will come looking for her.

  15. Dear Bloggers,
The rangers had to start the fire so that they could stop the spread of the phragmipedium panthera. The flowers are easily spread and take up a lot of room where they are. So that way other plants cannot grow and animals can't survive. Such as birds, that nest in trees can't survive. They spread so easily because a Rusty scientist engineered them to adopt to wider conditions but she messed up and they grow everywhere! They have to burn them to stop them from spreading.

I totally agree with you RH0530 about special circumstances. They are noesy! They want to know everything and anything they can get their hands on. They are people who want to be the ones to discover something and kinda of brag about it! They are using Tally to discover the Smoke. I also want Tally to be pretty! I don't know why, but her wanting it so bad in the book makes me want it for her too! Well blog to you all later.

I think that all the models and movie stars' carrers would crash and burn because they were "ugly" and weren't pretty and glamourous and perfect in every way. Even if they managed to keep there fame I don't think they would get very much publicity, I think they would get shunned and just ignored by all the other pretties in the world. The only thing that they would get known for is just simply being an ugly model/movie star. Don't you think?

  19. Dear Fellow Bloggers,
I honestly don't know which choice Tally will make. Right now, in the book, I think Tally will turn Shay in. Because being pretty is all that really matters to Tally right now and she will obviously do anything to turn pretty, even if it means breaking a promise to her friend. But maybe along the way as Tally starts to see how the people who live in the Smoke live. She might open her eyes to see that those people have a point and no one should just be pretty or ugly, they should just be themselves and be who they want to be not how they think they should be or how someone else thinks they should be.
I don't know what one Tally will choose but I know for one thing she will ether be betraying Peris or Shay.
    What are your thoughts?

    Sincerely,

  20. Bloggers,
Tally's operation is on hold for right now because Special Circumstances needs Tally to find Shay and bring her back or she will never be pretty and she will have to spend the rest of her life as an ugly. Tally reluctantly goes and tries to find Shay. I think Tally made a hard decision. Because ethier she turns pretty and totally stabs Shay in the back, or she stays ugly and stabs Peris in the back. Either one is nor good or bad I just think that turning pretty is more important to Tally so she reluctantly goes to turn Shay in.

    Sincerely,
    ab0406

P.S. Why does Special Circumstances even care that Shay is gone in the first place?

  22. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
The problem with Tally's operation is that Shay ran away to the "Smoke" and Special Circumstances wants her to turn Shay in. Tally made a promise to Shay to never tell anyone where she went. At first she wouldn't tell them where she went and I think that was being loyal to her friend. But then she had a change of heart and decided to turn her friend in just so she could be pretty!! I don't think that is very loyal and makes her seem very selfish. What do you guys think??

  23. Dear People that are reading the uglies,
The problem with Tally's operation is that the doctors who make you pretty will not let her become a pretty until she helps the find where Shay is at. Tally didn't know what to do in the fist place because Tally promised Shay that she would not tell where Shay ran away to no matter what. I think she is doing the wrong thing because she is going to get her friend in trouble just so she can look pretty. I would probably do the same thing but I know I would be doing the wrong thing.

I think Tally won't want to turn Shay in, but the Special Circumstances will find her. Then Shay will be really mad at Tally, but in the end Tally will turn pretty. 29. Dear Bloggers of all ages,
My prediction of if Tally will turn Shay in or not is, I think Tally's final decision will not to turn in Shay. I then think that Tally will just stay with the people of Smoke, but I think Tally is planning on turning her in now but I just don't think she knows how much Shay means to her and how she really doesn't want to lose her so Tally just might stay at Smoke and I think she might learn to like Smoke becasue people dont care if your ugly or pretty and it might turn out that it is what Tally really likes.

Special Circumstances is the headquarters of this secluded world. They seem to be in charge of everything. I think they were the masterminds of this place and all the brainwashing that took place to pull it off. They seem very secretive and manipulative. I don't think they should be so concerned on whether or not people want to become "pretty". I think that this is what led me to believe that they came up this place. This is kind of like fire. People could just be wanting a campfire, but by the end of the night they could have a whole forest fire destroyed. 34. Bloggers of The Uglies,
According to this book everyone in our society is considered ugly, even models and movie stars. I think this is "pretty" idiotic/ignorant! We are all created in the likeness and image of God. We are all one; fat, skinny, tall, short, black, or white! I think some of the glitz and glam has to go. Society is influencing so many people that in order to be "pretty" and "happy" you have to have all of this fortune and fame for being on a "reality" TV show. People are starting to conform to these earthly ways instead of dealing with the things that truly matter.

Tally's friend Shay did this and Special Circumstances won't let Tally turn pretty until she turns in Shay and the smoke. They told her that they would turn her pretty when she helped find Shay.
