  1. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
I think that it's amazing that David has grown up outside the city. The city hasn't brainwashed him into believing in what they want him to. He must think that some of the people who come to the smoke are really silly because he knows it's not true. For example, when teachers in Uglyville tell Uglies that the way that they feel about pretties is in their DNA and that they're born with it and there's nothing they can do about it. David knows that this is not true because he doesn't react that way to pretties. He may think they're, well, pretty, but he isn't mesmerized like city Uglies are. He probably has the same emotions for some Uglies. David doesn't know any other way of living other than how he is living right now. I think this is why he is so eager to share his lifestyle with others. He doesn't know what it's like to live any other way and he can't imagine how anyone else does either. ~ OR1020

  2. Dear Bloggers,
I thought the people of Smoke would have been really weird and all nature about things. What i found out that they seem like pretty normal people for this book. I wonder who created this place called Smoke. Maybe it was David but I'm not sure. It probably took a lot of thought when creating this place. They had to make sure they had all the materials they needed. For an example food, a way to trade things and water and how and where they were going to sleep. They also needed to build different things for their civilization. I think that its pretty neat that someone made this place because its so different from the ugly and pretty world.

  3. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
If I had to choose to betray the Smoke, or never become pretty at all, I would have had just as hard as a time as Tally does trying to decide which to choose. The question that would cross my head would be, "Should I think of myself, or of others?" I think that in the end, I would end up betraying the Smoke and becoming pretty because I would have been waiting for that one day for 16 years, and now I would have to give it up just because my friend ran away! If I were Shay I would feel really bad for Tally, because I would know that I conviced my best friend to do something that she really did not want to do in the first place. I think that Shay running away really made Tally upset, and made her wish that she had never met her. Tally shouldn't get punished because her friend ran away!

  4. Dear AH0926,
I agree with you that it is really neat how someone made the Smoke too. It probably took a lot of thought, effort, and time to put it all together. This person must have been very creative! Think about just going out on a hoverboard one day, and deciding to put together a whole new civilization! Imagine thinking about how food, shelter, and trading was going to work!! Do you think that the person who created the Smoke was from the Uglie world? To me it seems like David didn't create the Smoke because he hasn't really mentioned any clues about it. I think that maybe he was born there and lived there his whole life. I think it would be interesting if Tally brought David back to Uglyville, and showed David how everything worked there. I think that David would be amazed at how the Uglies lived.

  5. Hey Bloggers!
I am very mad with Special Circumstances. They are making Tally betray her best friend to become pretty. If I were Tally I would have just activated the thing that makes people from special circumstances know where she is because then all this would be done and over with. I had another idea- David's parents are doctors and they could turn her pretty, that way she can still be a good friend to Shay and get what she always wanted.

  6. Hello,
AH and MW: this one's for you =D. In a way I think it's bologna that someone created the Smoke. This book takes place in the future and I think that "the Smoke" is actually our world. I think this because they were talking about magazines and movie stars and it makes me think that someone just discovered our world and decided to call it Smoke- I think that they called it Smoke because of all the burning we did, because think about how much burning we do here in America. It's just a thought........

  7. Hello lovely bloggers,

You definitely bring up some wonderful topics for our classroom discussions! Some of the questions you are posing will be answered after you finish reading the pages for this week. If you have already finished reading these pages and you are not sure about who started the Smoke and why it began, then that is an excellent topic for conversation in class and hopefully you can post back and forth to answer some of these questions. There are twists and turns all through this book, which I love because that makes it difficult to predict the ending!!

  8. RH,

I definitely see some similarities between our world and the Smoke, but I don't think I would go so far as to say they are the same world. What are some differences you see between the Smoke and our world? One example I would give is that the majority of our population does not sew their own clothes, whereas the people in the Smoke make their own clothing.

  9. One question that I would like to pose for anyone interested in answering is "What are your thoughts about David's parents and the information that they gave Tally?"

  10. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
My question to contemplate is how do you think Shay figured out that Tally betrayed the Smoke? I know that in the end she didn't mean to do it, but in theory she was still the one to lead Special Circumstances to the Smoke. Tally leaves no obvious clues that she is the one who was sent to infiltrate the system, and up until that point, Shay completely trusts her. Anything could have led Special Circumstances to the Smoke and Shay chose to blame Tally. She had good reason to blame Tally because Tally was the reason that they came, but how did she know in that moment that it was Tally's doing? ~ OR1020

  11. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
In response to Ms. Steffen's post, "What are your thoughts about David's parents and the information that they gave Tally?" I have to say that this is an amazingly broad topic because the information that they gave Tally applies to everything said throughout the whole book. I think that David's parents were amazingly brave to swim against the current and do something different than everybody else rather than just forget everything that they had learned and pretend to be ignorant of the facts for the rest of their life. They ran away and left everything that they knew to persue something that they weren't even sure about. I think that it would be really hard to digest everything that Az and Maddy told Tally about the lesions. Basically, what they tell her turns her world upsidedown. Everything that she believed in about her city was turned inside out. I think that inside, Tally knew that it was true because she could really sense the difference between pretties and uglies. If I were told that about my world, I think it would take a lot of convincing for me to believe that it was for real. I think what David says about Tally, that she knows how serious everything is, is exactly right. ~ OR1020

  12. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
In response to RH0530, I never thought of that! It would be pretty cool if David's parents did Tally's operation. I think that I would be afraid that the opperation wouldn't be very sterile out in the wilderness and I don't think they have the right technology to do her operation, but its a good idea. Somehow I think that at this point in the book, Tally has accepted being ugly, which would mean that she would no longer think of herself as ugly, but normal. I think that she would be embarassed to face David if she had the operation because he already liked the way she looked when she was normal. Maybe David wouldn't care if she got the operation because he said that he liked what was on the inside of her. Reading through last weeks comments, I realized that as we get closer to the end of the book, I think that everybody who hasn't already read Uglies is going to get a real shock at how the book ends. I remember the first time I read the book I was really surprised and couldn't wait to get the second book! ~ OR1020

  13. Dear BEAUTIFUL Bloggers,
My question for all of you is if you were Tally, what would you do, and how would you react when you woke up one day and special circumstances was there when you didn't even know that you activated that little pendent thing? At first I would think, "Yay! Now I am going to be pretty!" But then I would start to feel worse and worse. I would start to feel like I had to try to avoid everyone, and that I had to try to blend in and act like I have no idea what is going on. What would you do?

  14. OR1020,
I think that maybe Shay knew that Tally was the one betraying the Smoke because Tally had just arrived at the Smoke a few days ago, and she was the most recent run-away that Shay knew. Also because it was long after Tallys birthday when she arrived, so she would have all ready been pretty. I also think that Shay was suspisious of Tally because she was kind of mad at her at the time because Tally stole Shays boyfriend!

  15. Dear Bloggers,
I think that if I had a choice to become pretty after finding out about the Leison they put in your brian, I would stay at the Smoke. It seems like they all work as a family and they help eachother do and buy stuff they need. When you turn pretty they don't just change your look. They also change the way you think and the way you would act in certain problems. No one knows the truth about the operation. They think that it is going to just make you pretty, which is the sad thing. They have some tough desicions to make. I don't think I could take on problems like that! Blog to you all later.

When I read about how even in a case where you try to destroy the necklace it sets off a message! Did anyone see that coming??? I kind of did because I had a feeling that some how special circumstances were going to find her. When she threw it in the fire I was thinking, ok may be this is the end, but then we still have like one hundred and twenty pages left, so I knew something had to happen. Then in the morning when she was like I see a hoovercar, I was thinking it was a dream. Did anyone else think that? Then when she finally saw Shay and Shay was ticked at her is made me really sad!!! 18. OR,

I am prepared to be shocked! I was driving with my Godchild this past weekend to Iowa City and she is reading this book also. She was 20 pages from the end and while we were discussing it, I could tell she was itching to give away what happens at the end. I warned her not to, as I like to be surprised when reading, but she also eluded to the fact that I will be shocked. I can't wait to get to the end!! I have a feeling I will be picking up the next book immediately!

One question I want to know about is how exactly do you set that special necklace that would go off so the people of the special circumstances would find out about smoke and come to smoke to come and find the people that live there. I also wonder how Tally can just set the necklace off and the people of special circumstances would know exactly where smoke is located.

I would be scared because I would be thinking where is David where is Shay? I would be nervous because I would wake up thinking I destroyed the pendent! How did they find me??? I would be nervous because I would think what if Shay and David and Croy find out that may be it was me? Would they still except me? Would they understand I didn't mean too if it was me? All these things would be going through my head except I wouldn't get an answer till later! Blog to you all later!

  24. Dear RH0530,
When David's parents said that more than just your looks change, I think they mean that it makes you think differently. I think it makes you think differently because the lesions scar the brain making the brain think and make you act differently. So the people that get the pretty surgery done and get the lesions think differently as well as look different.

  25. I am also curious about what everyone thinks the lesions on their brains do to the Pretties. Any thoughts? I hope we find out at some point, although I think the author may leave it as a mystery until the sequel.

  26. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
I'm going to discuss with you the event when David gave Tally some gloves. I was surprised when David gave Tally some gloves because I would've thought that David would've gave them to Shay. I understand that Tally had blisters on her hands and she felt tired but I'm sure Shay did to. Maybe David didn't give Shay the gloves because he thought that Shay was strong enough to handle it and Shay was able to swallow her pride and just do whatever needed to be done. I almost feel bad for David because he spent his hole life in the Smoke and never really seen anything but what was around him and the Smoke. How would you feel if you were David and never really had a social life and never seen a pretty up close and in person before?

  27. Dear Ugly Bloggers,

What did you guys think of when the specials people came over and destroyed the whole place of the uglies place. I thought it was kind of weird when they came over until, I figured out that at the beginning of the book tally escaped from the pretties place over in New Pretty Town. Now I think that they shouldn't be over there at the Uglies place because thats kind of rude because they didn't think before the acted, and that is one of the big rules in our world but I don't know about their world or not but It could be.

    ReplyDelete
  28. RH,
I totally agree with you! If she wanted to be pretty that bad and stay with Shay then David's parents could turn her pretty. But I also think Tally wants to experience the Pretty world! She wants to have party's with Peris and Shay together, but she knows that it isn't going to happen. Az and Maddie could give her the surgery with no sweat! They changed themselves for pretty back to ugly, so I think they could make Tally pretty. I also think that it wouldn't be a good thing because I think Shay and David would be upset with her if she tried to turn pretty. I also think that Az and Maddie would talk her out of it!

David said that he pretty much grew up in the wild. The part about that, that I am most surprised is that David seems pretty normal to me, because if you think about someone not living in a totally civilized town you would think they are going to be some what weird because they have not been out of the wild. Does David seem like a kind of normal person to any of you?

If I were Tally I think I would stay at the Smoke. I would stay there because everyone thinks you're pretty no one cares about looks. Also everyone is kind and thoughtful to one another. Also if I found out about the lesions and what they do to your brain I would definitly stay!! Tally is glad she chose to stay with David and Shay and I would be very glad too!!!

  31. Dear Ugly Bloggers,
I kind of guessed that the pendant would go off if Tally destroyed it. Doctor Cable probably had to make it activate itself if someone like Tally did decide that they didn't want to help Special Circumstances. A better way of doing it would be going really really really far away and burying it or something. What do you think? I wonder if David's parents are going to get caught, since they don't live in the Smoke.

  32. Dear Ugly Boggers,
I have a question you know when Tally and Cory and Shay all got caught by Special Circumstances and they were in 'the rabbit pen' and Shay was freaking out about the hole ordeal. Why do you think that Shay assumed thay Tally caused it all? I think Shay was just venting because she was really mad at the fact that Tally stole her boyfriend and she is all caught up in moment of being invaded by Special Circumstances.
    What are your thoughts?

  33. Dear MS0618,

I thought it was really sad as well when Shay started to chew out Tally. It was the perfect time don't you think, right in the middle of the invasion with everyone bleedng and fighting for their town and themselves. And in the perfect place, a 'rabbit pen' with handcuffs and all that jazz. I really felt bad for Tally because she thought that she destroyed the pendant and Special Circumstances would never her or the Smoke but there she was in a pen with Specials all over the place hurting eachother with her best friend yelling at her. Sounds fun doesn't it.

  34. MB0122,

Good thought about, if David's parents would be found. I don't think they will be found because I don't think that Special Circumstances would know where to look for them. But I can see how you would think they would get caught. What do you think Special Circumstances would do to Maddy and Az if they did find them? I think they would not necessarily torture them but maybe make their life miserable. What do you think?

  35. Dear Ugly Bloggers,

I'm wondering for when Tally is sleeping in and I forget if the uglies have a certain time for getting up for breakfast or something like that.I'm also wondering what you guys and girls are thinking of what might happen after page 303. What I think might happen is that tally is going to get her pretty makeover and then she's going to regret doing that. Another thing could be that if she doesn't she might go back and then everyone that she is friends with might think that she is kind of a retard and doesn't want to be friends with her anymore. Something that may be going on and if I'm incorrect can any of you guys tell me if I am, well if I remember, tally holds important info for the pretties or just because she escaped from them when they just wanted to change her look so that she is pretty for the first time. I don't know which one it is but all I know is that tally is going to be in "BIG TROUBLE" with her friends. Well just let me know if you guys think I'm wrong about anything I just said.

  36. AB0406,

Well I think that when Shay thinks that tally caused all of that of what happened, I think she is kind of right because when Tally escaped from the mansion in New Pretty Town, she's been holding important information for them and I forget if the info was in the book or not, but o'well.

  37. Dear Uglies,
A question that I have during this week's reading is how did Shay assume that Tally was the one who led Special Circumstances to the Smoke. Even though she was right did she assume that because Tally was so late coming to the Smoke. Or was it because she was the newest person to the Smoke? Tally felt really bad about this whole situation and I feel very bad for her.

I understand why you would think that David would be weird because he grew up in the wild. But he did grow up in a civilized town. I think the Smoke is very civilizied. They do stuff the same stuff as the people in the cities do, but just in a different way. The people there are pretty normal and he grew up around them so he was probably influenced by them. The phrase "It takes a town to raise a kid" comes into affect with David.

If you are an ugly then you are normal. Also your brain would stay the same. In the Smoke it seems like everyone is more caring and nice to eachother. It is more of a community of people then just a city.

Something that really stuck out at me as I was reading was David. How came from growing up outside of the city and his way of thinking is different from the rest of the people. So I think that the rest of the people's beliefs or not coming from their DNA, but from what they have been taught/told. I'm kind of confused on how he feels though. I'm not certain if he feels thankful that he knows the truth or if he feels like no one believes him? I like that he doesn't think the "pretties" are God!

  44. Uglies Bloggers,
Something that I was questioning while reading this week was the "smoke" and the rest of this "world". I might be crazy but, I think that the smoke is like the our world back in the older days, based on some of the things they do. I think that this other world was constructed/formed, but they left part of the "real" world and called it the "smoke".
I think part of the book is trying to show us how our world is forming. There are people on Earth that are somewhat similar to people in the smoke and there are the people that are mesmerized on becoming "pretties". Does that make sense to anyone?!
